This note is from the far southeast corner of the TL2 “Wilderness” where the internet connection is as fickle as the electricity. I am in Kindu. From the viewpoint of “government” hill I have a panorama of the Lualaba (=Upper Congo); in the foreground red brick walls of new government buildings rise against crumbling old colonial structures.

Dungu : ruins of a colonial castle

Dungu in the far north of the Democratic Republic of Congo borders on the Central African Republic and the south of Sudan. There are no government troops there since the local people asked them to leave two years ago. The infamous Lord’s Resistance Army is in the area, they crisscross the notional borders in the area attacking villages, kidnapping looting and killing. I was there to see what UNICEF needs to do to help. We stayed in sleepy Dungu meeting with local authorities and peace keepers.

On the banks of the mighty Congo River, Kinshasa is a vast metropolis, with over 7 million inhabitants. Like many urban areas in Africa, rows of shanty towns compete for space with districts of relative affluence. If Africa is to emerge as a global superpower, Kinshasa will have to be front and center.
